Throw Out the Rule Book

Throw Out the Rule Book

So, maybe ‘throwing it out’ is a drastic step, but you can’t apply the same rule book abled bodied people use to your life. You might be able to cherry-pick bit and pieces that fit in with your schedule or ability level, but as a whole ‘waking up at 5 am, doing yoga, and drinking lemon water’ probably won’t work for you for a number of individual reasons.

Let’s talk about why.

Blanket statements sweep the ‘business’ industry, and not just the ‘doing business industry’ but the ‘teaching’ business industry as a ‘one size fits all’ dogma. Now, if you’ve ever tried on a ‘one size fits all’ piece of clothing you’ll know that’s a load of bull. One size fits probably 1/50 people that dare to dry the clothing on, it’s chance. It’s luck. It’s a wheel of fortune spin. Whatever you believe, that’s what it is.

We’re told by both the teaching and the business industries that we must conform within a certain spectrum of self-help advice to succeed. The latest book will help, or a seminar, how about this $500 course that’s intended to tell you how to turn your life upside down. The same life you’ve spent years trying to perfect with the right balance of ‘taking into account exhaustion from minor tasks’ and ‘I need to rest’. It’s an impossible ask for a life that’s already precariously balanced.

So, why doesn’t anyone speak about it?

I mean *cough cough* they are, but by and large, the market doesn’t think disabled/chronically ill people can work, let alone be successful business people. I’d like to say it isn’t so, but I’ve consumed a LOT of self-help/business advice and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve thrown my hands up in the air when they tell me to do something that’s simply impossible.

If you have a collection of business books, don’t despair!

Don’t throw out the books, instead read them critically. Take in what your gut is telling you is helpful. If you think time blocking could help you, great! But if you get ill so often that it’s more stressful to time block, look at other systems that might help you.

Conforming to standardised business advice created for abled bodied people can be stressful, especially if you’re wondering why it hasn’t worked for you. But don’t worry, I’ve been through all* the YouTube channels and books to tell you you CAN find systems that work for YOU. It’s possible. The first step is to realise that the standard model probably won’t apply to your unique situation because that’s what you are – unique. And that’s truly amazing. Some of my best work has come about because the standard advice doesn’t work and I’ve had to come up with a totally new way to do things, and that’s what this blog is all about.

*Disclaimer: I say ‘all’. I’ve been through a LOT. It’s impossible to shift through all of the advice because it is endless, but there are themes that pop up time and time again.
